Feed Your Journal Search

jopml.org - get journal feeds as OPML

Developer Scott Wilson has created this website that gives you an OPML of RSS feeds for online journals. Type your subject matter into the search box and locate journal feeds. I've typed in "food technology" to locate 9 results. I can now subscribe to these through Google Reader.

I used a screen catcher to preview this search for you. The search text box is not live.

Some questions

Locate an article (topic guided by your product development research) from each of these sources, 1 newspaper article, 1 magazine article, 1 website article, 1 blog article. Compare the content, writing style, verification of both url and author's authority, copyright, date last modified.
  • How are journals different from newspapers?
  • How are journals different from magazines?
  • How are journals different from websites?
  • How are journals different from blogs?
  • Why would you search a food technology journal?

Firefox Customise Google Search

You can use CustomiseGoogle with your Firefox Browser to stream search fast! Remember that everyone is viewing the same top 1% of all results, so as a search sleuth that's reason enough to dig deeper...

CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information and removing unwanted information.
  • remove ads
  • add links to other search engines (Yahoo etc)
  • use Google Suggest
  • Enable filters (remove particular search results)
  • Stream search result pages
  • Add links to your fave bookmarks
  • A host of safety and privacy settings also within this extension
I'm enjoying the ad free search however if you are doing market research it will be helpful to include advertisers.

Semantic Search Engine-Hakia

Semantic Search allows for relevant search results. The Hakia Search Engine has a side by side Google/Hakia search results comparison.

Semantic search is mainly for research/information gathering, rather than navigating to a specific document source. This open ended query lends itself to Food Trend Spotting.

Search Wikipedia Articles

Powerset Wikipedia Article Search.

Powerset says- In the search box, you can express yourself in keywords, phrases, or simple questions. On the search results page, Powerset gives more accurate results, often answering questions directly, and aggregates information from across multiple articles. Finally, Powerset's technology follows you into enhanced Wikipedia articles, giving you a better way to quickly digest and navigate content.

I have found completely different information by using this search tool compared with the Wikipedia search function. I found the 2008 Best Food Blog recipient Tartelette here as well as Dana Mc Cauley's blog, both of which I have subscribed in my blog links. Dana is a Food Trend Spotter, author, presenter, recipe crafter, blogger and food and beverage marketer.
Discover her Trend radar...

You may use the search box below but clear it first! Or use link in title above.

Feeding the Feast

Imagine everyone's social media feeds fed into one search engine.
Friendfeed. But only if everyone signs up and only those social media sites that they feed in. You may opt in for a private feed yourself by the way. I recommend the advanced search.

Imagine finding the personal feed of your fave chef/food critic. What you might discover as s/he discovers it!

Restaurant Review Search

Reading Restaurant Reviews can inform your trend watching skills. What is the reviewer looking for? What are the most popular restaurants serving?

This search inspires me to find a menu search. I'm fascinated by menus. They come and go in the best of restaurants, they're far more predictable in more generic eateries.

The Washington Post provides a search box for Washington USA Restaurants.

  • Can you find a similar search in your area?
  • How might you set up a similar search for a particular area?
  • What tools (feeds, apps etc) might you use to create your own Restaurant Review Guide?
  • How might Google Maps apply?
